Going through a box of covers I haven't looked at for a while, I ran across this photo with the attached revenue stamp. I don't collect revenues and know nothing about it, but thought it might be of interest to some of you. What can you tell me about it?

Your photograph is of a size called a carte de visite. There are later larger format photos called cabinet cards.

Tax was charged on photographs based on cost; this tax was repealed August 1, 1866, so your photo is earlier than that. It was supposed to be paid by revenue stamp, typically cancelled by pen as it is here. Regular postage stamps were used (illegally) instead on rare occasions.

Here are more from a later period:

and there should be more archived from farther back

the civil war tax on photos was in effect aug. 1 1864 thru aug. 1 1866 on a sliding scale based on retail cost.
up to .25 cents = .02 cents, over .25-.50 cents = .03 cents, over .50 cents to $1.00 =.05 cents and each additional fraction of a dollar .05 cents more. the stamp is a scott r18c.
the pose is a typical studio shot, note the base of the stand used to help keep the subject's head from moving during the time needed to make the exposure. (behind right leg). manuscript cancel is the initials of the photographer. having the name of the subject is nice, and not usually found. googling both the name and photographers name might yield more info.

Many thanks to both Hy-brasil and m and m for the great technical education and history lessons. I always learn a lot from the Stamp Community Forum. I did do a very quick Google search on both names but didn't find anything. I will pursue it a bit more when it isn't so late.
