Does anyone know how to tell the difference between the litho and typo overprints on the 1903 issue of Serbia.

Mark -I ran into this problem some 30 years ago , the only way I handled it was to mount them with my own explanation ,not having a reference point .

The 5 para lithograph overprint is lighter shade of blue ,the others typographed are more darker blurred printing and the finer details are missing .

Mark,
Opinion: I only have one example,
Generally speaking typo is less defined and has a "blotchy" look about the impression in comparison with litho.

Here is Sc#69 with what I believe to be a typo. opt.

According to this site, under the heading 1903/04:

"It is impossible to reliably distinguish between overprints made in lithography and in letterpress. Nothing on this matter has been found in available literature.

Some specialists, however, state that one of the indicators that might distinguish between the methods is the form of the cross on top of the Royal Coat of Arms. Allegedly, in lithography, the cross tends to be thin and neatly defined and in letterpress more circular in form and in some "extreme" cases, in form of a circle.

Sometimes the pressure applied in letterpress overprinting was such that it deformed the paper and a pattern in form of the overprint could be observed at the back of the stamp. The pattern is visible only on unused stamps with original gum but not in all cases of letterpress overprints."

Thanks Jill,
confirms my opinion, mine is letterpress.

Update
Just to confuse things, I enlarged the Litho from Jill's link and was surprised to see this, I would have wagered the left was Typo.....

The typo(graphia) - and litho(graphia) = difference is very visible,
because in typo process, picture are bright, clearly corner of text,
very clear visible detailed picture.

In litho process, it is little bit opposite, and color will be like
"butter on bread", not so perfect, line around picture will be more
porous and not so perfect, in short - printing part will be less
quality visible.

If You need more detail about Yugoslavia and related countries -
contact me by email.
