Where can I buy a Nubian black album with black leaves by Stanley Gibbons? |

There'll be other stockists, but, in the UK, I use Dauwalders. Its price for 25 Nubian leaves is around £25. I don't think the Nubian binder is anything more than a standard black SG binder these days - they cost around £30. The current binders are a pale shadow of older versions. However, my own preference is for Dauwalder's own Knight offering. Black springback binder, made by Lighthouse, with 50 leaves costs around £38. Extra leaves are around £13 for 25. Unlike the Nubian, the glassine interleaving is separate, rather than being attached to the leaf. https://www.worldstamps.co.ukLots of their stuff - including the Knight album - isn't shown on their clunky site. Call or e-mail. These pages aren't for tropical climates! I'll try to post some pictures later. |

I love it GeoffHa! I just want to clarify- Lighthouse makes black quadrille pages, or those are the Nubian pages add to a LH album. Trying to understand the Knight offering. As far as glassine interleaving being separate, is this a pro or con? I would have thought attached would be better... Last Are you using hawid clear mounts?
Appreciate all your help!!!

No, the pages are either from Dawaulders, to go with their album, or from SG. I think the only black pages available from Lighthouse and Schaubek are thick card - more for dividing pages than mounting stamps.
Dauwalder contracts with Lighthouse to make the binders, which are in a standard UK size, rather than in Lighthouse's normal springback size. I also have some of these hole-punched in a four-ring Lighthouse Grande binder.
Don't think the interleaving makes much difference either way. Hawid-style clear mounts, or hinges for used.
Good luck. I was assuming that there was a US manufacturer of black leaves. Perhaps Bobby knows of others? |

I prefer black and white and inserting your colored stamps to see what you have and don't have. I remember a McDonalds contest back in the 1980s where there was a square black and white photo of 36 pieces of a Big Mac. You bought food and obtained a piece to put on the photo. I believe the grand prize was appox. $100,000 for a complete photo. I never completed the photo, but did win several free food prizes along the way. |

Coastwatcher... it's not what anyone here likes ---it's what YOU like and you enjoy! Look, you are the one that will have to look at it the pages day-after-day and hopefully year-after-year. Go with what your gut or that little voice behind you ear tells you you enjoy and have fun. Don't do something because someone else likes it. That's the great fun about collecting...everything is in the eye of the beholder. Hal |

Hal, I just asked out of curiosity. I like B&W album pages and they're all that I use. To be honest, I wouldn't use color pages if they were given to me. |

I think the color images look nice. That said, I prefer black and white images, with I think helps create added contrast with the mounted stamps. |

My choice is black and white as it makes the stamps I have on a page just look better and stand out from the rest of the page. |

I don't understand why album makers ever came up with color images on album pages in the first place. I'm fine if collectors like them, but was there really a demand for them? The ones I've seen make it very hard sometimes to tell if there's really a stamp in every box or not. I always wonder if I'm supposed to rub my hand over the page to find out. That wouldn't be good, would it? It's a bizarre concept in some ways especially in a hobby where "filling the empty space" with a colorful real stamp is what provides a lot of our pleasure. Covering a colored illustration of a stamp with a real colored stamp that looks just like the illustration, well . . . that's part of what I find bizarre. Also the illustrations often look better than my stamps. Now that just makes me mad. I'm glad to see another collector who uses Dauwalder's in Salisbury. I'm in the U.S. but I've had them ship me a lot of stamp supplies because they're very well made and not too expensive. Even with shipping, it's not too bad. I also like the idea of a black page album, but I'm not so good with laying out the (white) boxes on the pages or writing up the collection in white ink. That part I'd mess up, I'm sure. But they do look really nice. It's kind of pleasing to see brightly-colored stamps on black pages. Very elegant. Schaubek also sells black pages (Germany). They're heavy duty like light cardboard so can be used as fly leafs (end papers) in your albums or for mounting stamps on. Two types are available -- all black (with no border) and black with a single-line border. But you'll need a Schaubek binder to hold them, and that's more expensive than what Dauwalders's sells. |
