Is there somewhere (online) that the end dates can be found for post-Civil War revenue stamped paper? Also for the Spanish-American War documentary taxes? Did these taxes all sunset at once or did some categories end at different times?
Post Civil War paper ended for good on June 1, 1883 based on the Excise Act of March 3, 1883. However most stamped paper taxes ended before that; I think that only the check tax remained by that time. That tax law also ended the match & medicine stamps and changed the rates for many other categories. Spanish-American war taxes mostly ended in 1901, although at least some lasted until 1902. If Ron sees this, he knows far more then I do about the revenue stamped paper area.
