On April 16, 1991 Norway issued a set of two stamps (Facit #s 1108-9) commemorating the 350th anniversary of the city of Kristiansand, and the construction of Christiansholm fortress, which was built to defend the city. The 3.20 kr. stamp shows the fortress as it appeared in 1672, and the 5.50 kr. value shows it as it is today. From Wikipedia, "The fortress was finished in 1672 and formed part of King Christian IV's plan for defense of Kristiansand when the city was built in 1641. The architect of the fortress was quartermaster general William Coucheron...The only time the fortress has been in battle was against a British fleet force led by HMS Spencer in 1807 during the Napoleonic Wars." |

This January 31, 2019 computer-vended stamp of Ireland is one of eight designs released as part of its current definitive series "A History of Ireland in 100 Objects." The stamp shows an old rendering of Tullyhogue Fort, but the inscription reads Leac Na Riogh referring to the ceremonial throne which stood at this location, and is the important feature in Irish History. From Wikipedia, "Tullyhogue Fort is a large mound on the outskirts of Tullyhogue village near Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland...It is an ancient ceremonial site where chieftains of the O'Neill dynasty of Tyrone were inaugurated...The inauguration stone was a large boulder known as the Leac na Ri which meant 'the flagstone of the kings.' It stood outside Tullyhogue Fort, where by the 16th century it had become incorporated into a ceremonial stone chair where three large slabs had been placed around it. In 1602 during the Nine Years War, Lord Mountjoy, in charge of the English forces at war with Lord Tyrone, smashed the inauguration stone to symbolically end the O'Neill's sovereignty." Hugh O'Neill was the last Gaelic chief of Ireland. |

On May 22, 1985 Norway issued this stamp (Facit #958) to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Kongsten Fort, or Fredrikstad Fortress. The stamp depicts a calvaryman speaking with farmers below this small fort on the crest of a hill just outside Fredrikstad. The fortress was built to repel Swedish invaders. From visitnorway.com, "Kongsten Fort is located 500 meters east of the old town. It was built around 1680 on the rocky outcrop of Galgeberget. The fortress was constructed according to the Italian principles of fortification, with high bastions, hornworks, and redans that would provide protection from invading armies. Military strategists understood that, if captured, the small hill would provide the enemy with a raised platform for their artillery, greatly increasing the range of cannon shot." |
