Help With Stationery Covers

P. G. T. Beauregard is a very well known historical figure, that's a nice card to find.

The censor marking on the cover at the start of the thread is French, not Swiss.

It amazing to think they could sail the Kaiser Wilhelm II all the way to Switzerland!

Kimo thanks but the second last photo. The round stamp where the Washington 3 cent 2c on 3c Dark Violet U480; UPSS 3038 showed has some peculiarities. I buyed only this on the auction because it was in my opinion the most special of the bunch.

My opinion is based on U480 being relatively common postal stationery combined with there being a plethora of so called errors in the overprints that do not carry much if any additional premium. The second consideration is condition. While this cover is not in terrible condition, it is somewhat rough, especially in the opening at the top and the overall degree of wear on it. Condition is of high importance.

The card to Beauregard is nice, but cards and letters to famous people generally have minimal additional value as opposed to cards and letters from famous people. Is there any interesting on the back to indicate that it was sent from someone famous?

ok1's transcription is correct. The writer is asking for the lottery numbers from the Louisiana State Lottery Company, which Beauregard was associated with. Very collectible as early lottery memorabilia.

"One of the lucky few -- Unlike most Confederate leaders who struggled financially after the war, Beauregard attained significant wealth when he was appointed to head the Louisiana Lottery in 1877, backed by a New York syndicate that wanted to tap into the New Orleans mania for gambling. What ultimately was created, was undoubtedly the largest gambling organization to exist in the United States before the 20th century. "At its height the lottery had a gross annual income of some $29 million. [Beauregard] was probably more successful than any other prominent Confederate general in making a living and accumulating wealth in the hard years after the war," Williams wrote.

That makes sense.
