1 Cent Strip Of Three

Any help in plating/types of this strip of 3 would be greatly appreciated!I can try and take some additional photos.

I'm probably not the person you're looking for, but as a heads up for those you are looking for you're going to want to have some much closer photos of the stamps themselves. Identifiers such as the detail of the frame surrounding the face design itself are key to this type of stamp. That's a cool strip you have! It's very interesting how badly the side perforations cut into the stamp.

I appreciate the photo tips! I'll definitley take some better photos. And I agree about the Perfs! This is one of my favorite covers so far.

It is Relief A Plate 5, 7 or 8 (as shown by the guide dots). Doesn't look like Plate 5 (ornaments don't seem complete enough to be Type Va), don't see the Plate 7 "eye curls." So I'd guess top row Plate 8 pending higher-res photos.

I tried to take some better photos...thx for the #24 help! And I do hope to add this one to the album I'm making for my twin boys. I inherited a fairly large stamp collection and only began learning about them in the last two years ago. I can't wrap my head around the plates etc. lol

daf, your new photos show that the strip is positions 8-9-10R8, with 8R8 and 10R8 both showing double transfers (look at the O in POSTAGE on the left stamp for the clearest indication).

nice cover. the misperf is amazing and the dt's just add to it.

Its also a "Fort" cover, being addressed to Fort Madison, on the west bank of the Mississippi.

I have seen three 8-9-10R8 strips. This is an interesting one because of the misperf. Now I am even more envious!

Thx all for your help! I had no idea this was a "Fort". I did a quick search on the name and found it was addressed to an old judge. Pretty cool!

Very interesting finding a photo of the addressee 150 years on. History and stamp collecting go together.

Just want to say that the stamps and on cover are fascinating.
I have no knowledge or real interest regarding classic US stamps
but the fact that the cover is probably late 1850s to early 60s/ Civil War Era is what peeks my interest.

Anyone know what year that cover was mailed? When did they
start including the year on US cancels?


daf_16you state in your intro post that you inherited
a large collection. From a family member?
Was the cover related to any family ancestor?

The fact that you are planning on leaving it for your sons

Early on it varied by city. Some of the larger cities such as New York were using year-dated CDS's on a large scale, starting in about 1856. There are uses prior to then for sure, but 1856 saw a significant ramp-up. Not all post offices adopted this practice at once.
