I received this email from Tom; Quote: Hi Everyone,
We have had a number of people ask if we can do agent bidding for the auction firms that do not do live bidding.
We did a survey to gather more info and the top two requests were Harmer-Schau and Cherrystone.
We have spoken with Cherrystone and they have agreed to test this feature in 2 of their three upcoming sales. For the morning sale, German WWII Occupation Issues - The Winterfell Collection - February 20, 2019, we are going to provide Agent bidding alone. You will have to submit your agent bids using the SAN Agent bidding feature prior to the sale.
For the afternoon sale, Great Britain - The Brian Pottow Collection - February 20, 2019, we are going to offer Agent Bidding, but also allow you to follow and bid live in the auction using our live bidding platform.
Because there are additional costs to us to manage the console, there will be a 2% fee on winning bids.
- Tom Droege I think agent bidding on auctions that don't have live bidding would be a big improvement. I rarely win when I have to submit a bid ahead of time. Any thoughts?

I bid at Cherrystone using their own live bid platform and love it. If you have not used it Ken it is worth a shot. |

Sounds better than giving your bids to the auction firm . I found that out the hard way . All my winnings were at my maxmium bid on the higher price lots and a tick or two lower on the cheaper lots .That went on with a few firms ---NEVER AGAIN .

Question
Is it a mistake to enter your best bid on SANs in advance of the closing due to potential manipulation by the auction house?
Are you saying a bid agent (or live bidding when available) is the only way to make sure this does not happen?

Quote: Is it a mistake to enter your best bid on SANs in advance of the closing due to potential manipulation by the auction house? In short: yes. Not just due to manipulation by the auction house, but for the same reason you don't want to leave early bids on ebay auctions: it allows other bidders to see that there is interest in an item and "feel out" your maximum by incrementally bidding you up. Whether it's ebay or live auctions, either snipe/use an agent or bid live. No advanced bidding of any kind, IMO. |

Most readers here would be surprised by the high percentage of lots that are up for auction that are owned by the firm or is owned by a member of the firm .That is a extra incentive to get the best price . |

Quite a few auction houses here do roadshows around the country, enabling them to attract consignors or purchase direct. Others will travel to the continent to pick up material, particularly with a view to getting collecting/geographical balance within a sale. |

Heck, some of the auctions on SAN are really dealer lists that you can bid on, i.e. everything is owned by "the house". And always, always read the terms & conditions -- the occasional sale on SAN is run as a first-price auction (i.e. if you bid $1,000 and the runner-up bids $500, you don't pay $550 or $600 or whatever the next bid increment is, you always pay your full bid of $1,000 and whatever 'juice' on top of that.) |

Some of the best advice I've ever been given was by Jeff Purser. He put it bluntly, if it is a lot you'd like to have, give a lo-bid to the auctioneer. If it is something you absolutely have to have use an agent. Since I collect areas that I'm often the only bidder, I find an agent invaluable. My classic experience is a lot for which I gave the agent a $600 bid and he bought it for me at $60. |

I guess I got lucky on my first SANs auction recently having not been outbid on the majority of items. I won, most a tick or more below my best bid, having entered all bids approximately one hour before non-live bidding ended on the SANs platform. This was for material that was a lot better than much of what is offered on ebay and at a better net price from my review of realizations. It sounds like this is not typical and I should strongly consider using the Agent service which is the closest thing to sniping on SANs from what I can gather. What is the best/fastest way to find out if I had any luck with McCusker today with my static best bids placed on SANs last night? Do I just sit an wait for an e-mail message, which is how I learned of my first SANs wins, and my one other auction that resulted in me being an "underbidder?" |

Redtail - It depends upon whether the auction you bid in and won was live. Also, if you wish to enter your best bid and it is not a live auction consider mailing it to avoid other SAN users seeing the bidding level and perhaps competing. I only bid in live auctions because of the noted potential issues. Here are the McCusker realizations from SAN. https://stampauctionnetwork.com/pricesrealized.cfm |

I find that I am the underbidder on a high % of the lots I bid on with non-live auctions. Sometimes I feel like an unpaid shill bidder. I have sat in auctions and heard the auctioneer tell the floor 'Oh come on guys one more bid and it'll be of the book and I won't have to ship it". It's funny when he says it but when you submit bids ahead of time and you lose them all by 1 increment it's not so funny.
If an item is important to me I travel to the auction. |

Rogdcam Thanks but the link comes back with an error but I was able to find it on the SANs site. A big Strike out for me. Maybe next time. As a side note I find their primo stuff when offered on ebay does not get these higher realizations but my sample size is tiny. |
