Just wondereing if anyone has an opinion as to what die these cutsquares pictured are. I have them as (larger piece U436g and the other one as U436 h ..... comments please
After rotating both CSQs the right figure '3' tilts to the left. That makes these both Die 144(E)5. You can verify by checking the head size. Die 143(A)1 has a large head, 9 1/4 mm. Die 144(E)5 has small head, 8 3/4 mm. Resolution of the scan makes measurement difficult. 600DPI is preferred.
ADDED: see my book Collectors Guide to the Circular Dies
What no one so far has noticed is that these are color errors. The proper color for the 3 cent circular dies was purple or dark violet. These are the carmine errors.
Yes, Stampman, and being color errors reduces the die possibilities to two which is only down from three. Die 1 color error occurs only on size 11 plain front envelopes and is less likely to become a cut square. Die 5 color error occurs only on size 10 window front envelopes with corner cards and is quite likely to be converted into cut squares. Such information helps narrow our choices in the identification process. Considered by most to be color errors these are actually errors of value created when the wrong die was placed on the printing press. At least one press crew was fired for this mistake.
