This one cent stamp was the first of the "Cabot Issue", a 14 stamp set commemorating the 400th anniversary of Cabot's discovery of Newfoundland. The one cent also celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Issued June 24, 1897. Scott #61 The top right corner shows the design error of the number 1 reversed.

Nice stamp john62. Thanks for sharing. This is the first time I have seen this variety.
(Just saw wert's entry - I thought that it was an error also)
Interesting.

This stamp is not a printing error, but an error in the stamp's design itself. The problem is that the design is flawed.

This is an issue from August 15, 1910. Scott#92 The original design misspelled the word as shown in the scan below. It was reissued after the error was found as shown in the example on the right. And to top it off. Sir Francis Bacon was never Lord Bacon, he was Lord Veralum. |

I agree that there are a number of oddities as you call them. Is that example actually a design error? It could be argued that the cent symbol is under the value and not in front or behind it.

I stand by that it is a design error as the very next year Scott#80 was issued and as you can see by the comparative scans, this was corrected. Cheers |

This is bit more of an eye sight test. 1897 Newfoundland Scott#68 is supposed to portray Cabot's ship The Matthew. They obviously used the engraving for the US Scott#232 The Santa Maria. The only difference that I can see is that they have a few less markings on the sails and modified the Ship's flag. At that time of re-engraving they should have corrected the mistake in the US stamp of 1892 and had the flag blowing with the wind rather than against it. |

Both stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Company, New York, NY. This one is from the Canadian Bank Note Company, Ottawa, ON which was a subsidiary of the American Bank Note Company, New York, NY. |

john62...Look again..They are TWO completely different stamps.. Robert P.S. - The Scott 199 below is incorrect..It shows 8 fishing ships leaving, but the drawing was incomplete...In reality one of the ships broke down, there were only 7 that actually left the harbour..Little known fact. |

This 1933 stamp marks the 350th anniversary of the annexation of Newfoundland by Sir Humphrey Gilbert on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I. As indicated by the arrows, it shows five ships arriving at St. John's however, only four arrived as the Bark Raleigh had returned to port on it's second day of the journey from Plymouth. Newfoundland Map Scott#145 issued January 3, 1928 Cape Bauld is shown on the map above Cape Norman, which is incorrect. A re-engraved stamp Scott#163 was issued September 26, 1929 correcting the mistake. Also shown is one of my favorite error on an error |
