As an aside ... The Spitfire VD
"Clipped ,Cropped, and Clapped"

Concerning the clipped wings Spits, the Spitfire V-D, Closterman mentioned that RAF
fighter pilots did not like this version very much, having nicknamed them "clipped,
cropped, clapped"…
"Clipped": "In order to increase lateral maniability, Vickers Armstrong engineers reduced
the wing span of the aircraft by about 1 meter, cutting off its harmonious elipse."
"Cropped": "The Spitfire V-D was fitted with a Merlin Rolls-Royce 45 only, with a
reduced diameter compressor turbine, to increase power, below 1,000 meters, from 1,200
hp to 1,650 hp. The volume of supercharged air being, however, very much reduced, the
power curve fell rapidly from 2,500 meters, until giving, at 3,500 meters, only about 500
HP. In addition, these engines, artificially pushed up to 18 boosts of admission, had a
very short life."
"Clapped": A slang term referring to a sexually transmissible disease which expresses the
general opinion the RAF pilots had of the Spit V-D, most probably in reference not only
to its performance but also to the identification letters of the type…
Rod: Clapped in Aussie Slang =
worn out, usually applied to machinery;"That car's just a clapped out heap of junk"
