I bought this set for $70.00 from a trusted seller for 17.5% of catalog value ($400.00). He was retiring and selling everything at very low prices. After buying it and researching this issue, I learned that the market is flooded with counterfeits. There are several times more fakes than genuine, meaning the possibility that mine are counterfeits was higher than them being genuine.

So, I recently sent one stamp to APS for certification. I only sent in one of the four so not to lose more money than necessary if they were fakes. It came back as genuine and I am relieved. I believe the other 3 would also come back as genuine.

Hi quigngt,

Pretty sure this error is one of the Format International "productions" put out by Clive Feigenbaum. Long story short: He got the contract to represent a bunch of little nations and print their stamps, and took advantage by printing a bunch of errors and oddball varieties to hold back and sell. There were lawsuits about it in the early 1990s.

Here's an article that discusses these and other goings-on from Format:

Well, what I just read from the first link, seems to be saying that these are worth thousands of dollars and that it was an accident.
Now I want some of these stamps. Hey,

As an aside ... The Spitfire VD
"Clipped ,Cropped, and Clapped"

Concerning the clipped wings Spits, the Spitfire V-D, Closterman mentioned that RAF
fighter pilots did not like this version very much, having nicknamed them "clipped,
cropped, clapped"…

"Clipped": "In order to increase lateral maniability, Vickers Armstrong engineers reduced
the wing span of the aircraft by about 1 meter, cutting off its harmonious elipse."

"Cropped": "The Spitfire V-D was fitted with a Merlin Rolls-Royce 45 only, with a
reduced diameter compressor turbine, to increase power, below 1,000 meters, from 1,200
hp to 1,650 hp. The volume of supercharged air being, however, very much reduced, the
power curve fell rapidly from 2,500 meters, until giving, at 3,500 meters, only about 500
HP. In addition, these engines, artificially pushed up to 18 boosts of admission, had a
very short life."

"Clapped": A slang term referring to a sexually transmissible disease which expresses the
general opinion the RAF pilots had of the Spit V-D, most probably in reference not only
to its performance but also to the identification letters of the type…

Rod: Clapped in Aussie Slang =
worn out, usually applied to machinery;"That car's just a clapped out heap of junk"

Well, at least I have one of Formats certified genuine "scam" stamps which I am sure will be worth $500,000 before I die. On second thought I'll remove one "0" since I only have 20 years, more or less, remaining in this world. Yeah, $50,000 sounds more reasonable in that short time span. Though I'm not sure my kids will want to hang on to them till they reach the that half million mark.

Then again, none of my kids have any interest whatsoever in stamps so they might drop off everything I have in a Goodwill bin.

Stamp collecting interest skipped a generation in my family before it landed in my hands. You never know.

Thanks Quig,
sometimes you wonder why one post things, surely no one is interested,
then you come along. Makes it worthwhile.
Any lover of the Spitfire will no doubt feel the clipped wings are all wrong.......
