Seems like a hefty amount to add, just for paying by a personal check (assuming this was used back when 10 cents meant something).

A clearinghouse was charging that fee so it reduced the check value given to the receiver by 10c, so the receiver was rightfully concerned. It's like today's bank wire transfer fees. When my clients pay my invoices by wire transfer, I get $25 less.

Wow, time to have them use a bank etransfer. Much less and at their expense and not yours.
