So I have these 2 stamps that have DBP on the back. Its visible by naked eye. The Scott catalogue does not list a watermark. Do these stamps have a watermark? Also, if so, is it correct to refer to the marking as watermarks or is there some other term? In other words, is the correct terminology "watermark" for visible and invisible markings? Are these watermarks?

Tks in advance.

Hi.
Those stamps (and many german stamps from this period) have this watermark :

Watermark 5 (DBP and cruciferous) according to Michel catalog

This is a stamp that used a common European design, though several countries printed their own versions (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Saar). It's CD1 (Common Design 1). In 1958 the type of watermarked paper that you show (WM304) was in common use.
Though it may not be noted as the specific watermark for the issue in the German Scott catalog for entries 790 and 791, it seems more to be an omission from Scott (or an expectation that the previously noted stamp with WM304 is "continued" through listings until it changes, though WM304 is noted on other entries in the next column). It doesn't seem to be an error, rather the common issue.

CD1 entry from Scott

WM304

Ahhh. Thank you both. Now I am wondering if I should use another catalogue?? I know no catalogues are perfect, but this is the 3rd or so ommisssion \ error I've encountered with Scott and it's very confusing. Thank goodness for this board! I did see the stamps on hipstamp and stampword, but no info on watermarks. Shows the value of saving older catalogues.....

If you are serious about German stamps I would consider a Michel.

A Michel, and an older one is fine if you're not concerned about up to date valuations. I use one from 1978 and for identification purposes beyond what Scott has it works great. As well as covering much extra - e.g. post WWII local posts.

I only have the German specialized one (in German), and it is extremely detailed. Almost too much detail sometimes! You don't need to know much German - really just common words, colours and philatelic terms - to use it. I know there are less specialized ones available, but not familiar with them.

I agree with 100% with gmot. A German language edition of Michel is mandatory if you are going to seriously collect German stamps. Philatelic German is very easy to follow and understand. For the rest, Google translate or other online translation services will do very well, and you can also find multi-language philatelic glossaries online.
