This Animal probably feeds upon the Paper and covers of Books, and perforates in them several small round holes, finding, perhaps, a convenient nourishment in those husks of Hemp and Flax, which have pass'd through so many scourings, washings, dressings and dryings, as the parts of older Paper must necessarily have suffer'd; the digestive faculty, it seems, of these little creatures being able yet further to work upon those stubborn parts, and reduce them into another form…..

Thanks perf12 and vayolene!

Perf12 after your information I can assume that the story of the envelope is more complicated, The first letter left on 20 October 1890 from Makri (Fethiye, is a port city, and district, on Turkey's southwestern Turquoise Coast. This city has big history see https://translate.google.com/transl...&prev=search

The second letter left from symi the Greek island on 29 July 1891

The receiver was on Nisiros the Greek island.

From the shape of the letters and the envelope seems the two letter was on the same envelope.

I had no idea that mourning covers existed outside of the English speaking world, until just now!
