Hi folks, I am working my way through a bunch of London pre-stamp covers and cannot figure out the office for these four handstamps. Any help would be much appreciated 1) The letter was posted from Bramley, near Guildford in Surrey in 1822. It appears to start with 'New'. 2) This one starts with 'Lo' and will be a country office because of the 3 handstamp. It dates from 1824 and is addressed to Bedford Square. 3) This appears to start with a '3' and clearly ends in 'Terrace'. It dates from 1833. 4) This letter is headed up Bedford Row which is very close to High Holborn. It was posted in 1834. It looks like it has 'ersen' or 'orsen' in the name. Thanks everyone.

Bobby, Pick it up for a few dollars.. any more take a miss, it teases rather than instructs, but gives an idea where to start with markings. Not useful for adding a commentary on markings for a particular cover. |

Thanks Rod. I have volume 3 of the County Catalogue of British Postal History by Willcocks & Jay but for these types of handstamps (and receiving office handstamps) there is no listing. Otherwise the book is quite comprehensive. Published in 1983 but there are loads of updates in the London Postal History Group journals that are online.
Hugh Feldman is the go to publication for twopenny post and receiving house handstamps so I'm hoping someone has a copy! |

Hello Bobby, Can only help with three of them, using Brumell's The Local Posts of London 1) I think is Newington Butts, but it is abbreviated to Newtn Butts 2) I cannot find anything beginning with LO with matches to the other letters. These are the listings for LO :
Lombard Street London Road - looked likely but not matching the end
Long Acre
Lothbury
Loughton - this also looked possible
Lower Brook Street
Lower Grosvenor Street No.77
3 ) I think is Park Terrace which opened in 1831
4) Pretty certain is BATTERSEA in lowercase letters Battersea
Hope that helps Regards. Eunice |

Thank you Eunice, a thousand thank yous I did have a look at the 1843 Post Office London Directory and there's a place in Kent called Locksbottom. A possibility perhaps? |

Wow so that's a new one for us, I checked in the Willcocks & Jay and they have it listed BUT strangely, there is no other information at all about it, but it is in the TwoPenny Post listing so you may have hit the nail on the head, well done. Regards Eunice.

Nice work Bobby, never come across Locksbottom in 15 years of collecting, in fact all your "stepped" pre stamp strikes are a fascinating new area for me. Be nice to afford the covers. I checked out Hugh Feldman , but at $86 was too heavy for me. Locksbottom not in the Philatelic database. Here she is in 1905 https://maidstonestampemporium.jimd...kent-g-to-l/ |

Thank you so much Eunice and Rod Great postcard Rod, Kent is one part of the UK (among many) that I haven't explored....yet Oh well, I don't need any excuse to go back, I love it over there. I've developed quite a thing for London postal history so I've sprung for the Feldman book. Will report when it arrives! |

The Feldman books arrived this morning and there's simply no way to overstate how stunning a production they are. Weighing just over 4 kilograms or 9 pounds, bound in rich red cloth with gold lettering and housed in a (slightly too tight) slip case, this must've cost a few £££'s to produce back in 1998. I've taken three representative photos:

With so much information, it'll take many weeks of reading just to take in the scope of this work. This is easily the best philatelic publication I own, worth every last penny I paid |

Lovely stuff Bobby, I recall my joy when I received my Turkey Tomes, from Postmaster GS. Well then, you are the "go to" man for pre stamp knowledge. |
