I'm having trouble seeing a difference between a China A37 and A57 in the catalog pictures. And there seem to be a variety of perforations for these. Can any one tell me a clear way to tell the difference? Thanks! - Troy

Type A37 ("second issue", 1931) has columns on the sides of the portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Type A57 ("third issue", 1937-38) has elaborate branch/vine-like scrollwork ornaments (I'm not sure what they represent, if anything in particular -- intertwined dragons?)

A37 and A57 designs.
The designs in the side frames and top of A57 I think are referred to as "Arabesque"

The arabesque is a form of artistic decoration consisting of "surface decorations based on rhythmic linear patterns of scrolling and interlacing foliage, tendrils" or plain lines, often combined with other elements.
