1840 penny blacks and 2d blue stuck to letters commonly have date stamps struck somewhere on the letters apart from just having the stamps cancelled with Maltese crosses, but I have come across these stamps used on letters cancelled with Maltese crosses but without CDS. I was wondering what old post office regulations say about date stamps and is it compulsory on letters?

No idea about PO regulations pennyblackie but from my three MX covers, two are posted from London to London (one is 1842, the other 1843). The only other markings are Receiving House stamps and red London datestamps. The other is posted from London to Huddersfield in 1843. It has a London and a Huddersfield datestamp on the reverse, both in black. |

Almost impossible to evaluate broad-brush postal history generalities when this is a case needing an illustration. |

I have prestamp covers that have no receiving mark. I don't think it's a particularly rare occurrence but I've no idea if it's against regulations. |

I have checked with gibbons, they said that it is common for local use not to have a date stamp. This must have been an important letter to the garment manufacturer, explaining why the sender put 2d instead of a penny in the letter. I am eagerly awaiting for this to arrive and be part of my collection. |

Would like to see a scan of the contents when arrived, please. Just 11km from my Mum's birthplace. Fox could either be a clothing company, or Bank The contents should give us a hint. Fox Fowler Bank Note £5 (wiki) |

Rod222, I thought there is only one Fox Brothers (foxflannel.com), didn't realise there was a bank by that name. Will let you guys know the contents when I get the cover.
Bobby, I am not sure if the letter went to 2 ounces. The sender could have included a cloth sample or simply uprate the letter for peace of mind. |

It is interesting to note that taking the first class rate today and compare it with the rate in 1840, the rate has only gone up 9+ times gram for gram... |
