A one-shilling from St. Lucia, depicting Fort Rodney:

The first South Africa issue (Scott #1):

(A beautiful stamp, no?)

And one of the first of Barbuda's stamps issued while a dependency of Antigua, overprinted on Leeward definitives in 1922:

Time to inject a little tone into the discussion. From Gwalior, with his son making up the balance:

And speaking of his son, a stuttering overprint on Gwalior

And Jind doing its best to bury Himself in overprints and surcharges:

You gotta love the snake on the registration label. I don't think I have an example of the nine pies with Jind. I'll have to put that one on the list.

I just thought I might take a look at Gibbons' listings for Gwalior overprints...won't make that mistake twice.

The famous "of clandestine origin" makes an appearance after a few different inverted overprints. Which begs the question, are the double strikes generally considered to be legitimate? One would assume so, since they don't earn the same comment that the inverts receive.

Cjd, as long as Gibbons think the Gwalior is all according to Hoyle, I'll hang onto it. If I ever hear any whispers sbout it not being so, you'll hear from me with an offer to sell. Unfortunately, I think I've offloaded my collection of clandestine funnies: I had a few, particularly from Nabha, but they've all gone to good homes.

The Gwalior cobras are rather cute. In his Old Granny's time, Gwalior also had them in their CDSs

but I don't think they lasted into Himself's time.

BTW, I have a spare (mint only, I'm afraid ) copy of the Jind 9 PIES overprint. If you remind me of your address, you're welcome to it.

And one more, from the George V era, in an attempt to curry (ahem!) favour with Rod222:

Oh, come now, Rod

Even these excecrable objects? Tell me this is a limp attempt at humour - or that you've been out for too long in lycra on your velocipede in the Summer sun.

Here is a garden-variety definitive from Grenada, but they did a nice job with it...

...doesn't it make you want to visit?

As for the flaw on the East Africa, I don't see it listed in Gibbons. Might just be a dust speck during printing?

They took pride in each and every design and value back in those days, as can be seen when one looks at some of the proofs for even the commonest of stamps. Nowadays someone spends an afternoon in photoshop inserting imagery into a template and bingo, a new issue.

Which leads me to the following 2 images thst I have scanned from the 'Shaida IV' Harmers Auction Catalogue from 1994. This is one of the nicest collections I have ever laid my eyes on, and contains many proofs, essays, trials and print/perf errors. The following are relevant to todays inquiry from Londonbus1 regarding the KGV Post Office Saving Stamps that were used in Great Britain from 1911 - 1920. The fact that this type of material exists is proof of the hours and hours of work by talented artist for each of the designs.

Have a good one,

Skilo54

Speaking of a 25c. G.E.A.~East Africa and Uganda, have a look at this one that has always had me wondering:

I have always had the thought that this was a bit of a double kiss or something? What would be the general consensus on this one? Worth noting or shall I move on and not worry about it?

Next is also on a G.E.A.~East Africa and Uganda KGV stamp, but this one is the 3c. value, or should I say 3G. value? Have a look at the interesting printing flaw that has occured on this one. I would love to know whether it is transitory or recurring. This same stamp also has a break in the base of the crown, which could also be a constant variety?

Have a good one,

Skilo54
