The name of most themed collections are simple: butterflies, fish, cars, architecture, etc. but I'm having trouble trying to come up with the name for my theme. This is my first post. I collected worldwide as a teenager in the 70s, but am now getting back into collecting, but with a narrower focus. I am collecting German (my heritage) stamps that have images of historical people. Is there a term for these types of stamps? Is anyone else collecting this type of themed stamps? Thank you.

Welcome.
Not sure that this is a mainstream collecting topical area...but perhaps 'Germanic Historical Figures'? Don |

Thank you 51studebaker. I was thinking just "historical figures," but just doesn't sound right. I really can't go with "Germanic Historical Figures" as some of the stamps are depicting non-Germans, such as one in 1964 of John F. Kennedy.
I chose this theme because of my Germanic heritage, but I also love history. I didn't think this kind of themed collection was "mainstream," and I thought I would do something "unusual" :-) |

Guys? I don't think Amalie Sieveking would appreciate that. And, as has already been pointed out, not all these people were Germans. |

As someone who studied Germanic Linguistics, I would avoid using the term "Germanic" here. Its application (in linguistics, at least) is too broad to be appropriate. Germanic languages include not only High and Low German, but also Dutch, Flemish, Afrikaans, Frisian, Yiddish, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Faroese, Icelandic, and even English. I would stick with "German" or "Germany" as a descriptor.
I have some famous Germans in my topical collection of Random Stuff That I Like (not an official title). Because of my interests, these tend to be philologists (Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm), humorists (Wilhelm Busch, Karl Valentin), or supermodels (Heidi Klum), not to mention humorous characters from fiction and legend, such as Till Eulenspiegel and Struwwelpeter. |

I'd just refer to it as German Personalities, and understand to myself what German means in this context. |
