Hi! I'm a new stamp collector from NJ, I am also a numismatist (hence the name) and I collect paper currency as well. I'm hoping to make Philately the third and final piece of my colloquial "triumvirate" of hobbies. I have no speciality or specific collecting interest as of now but I am sure that will change over time. I inherited my grandfather's collection (a whopping four stamps) a few days ago and decided that now was a great time to get started collecting. Looking forward to learning more about the hobby and everyone else's interests! |

Welcome! That's four less stamps you need to collect. I've been interested in getting into numismatics myself, but haven't had the time to research it. Would you say the red book is the go to resource for coin collecting? |

Thanks! They call the Red Book the "bible" of coins but I do warn you the prices/valuations are on the high end/side. I believe the Scott books for stamps are similar, no? I remember reading somewhere that you should expect to lose a percentage of the listed Scott value if you're trying to sell stamps.
In terms of information, the Red Book is absolutely fantastic. Personally speaking, it's the gold standard.
As for philately, are there less expensive books or sources other than Scott? I'd love to have all of the Scott books but there's no way I am paying $600 for those reference books. What are your thoughts on Stamp World?

Welcome.
Catalogs are good general references but the valuations are not market values; like coins and currency, condition plays a critical role in values.
You might take a look at Stamp Smarter website, it has a lot (thousands of pages) of information which will help you.

I am very close from the Philly area. Have a very small WW coin collection. But I have complete sets of mint state quarters, national park quarters and presidential dollars :) |

I'm really curious which 4 stamps you inherited! Also, I bought a set of Scott catalogues that were 4 years old. Got them piecemeal from libraries or dealers who were discarding older editions. Paid $2-3 dollars per volume. Prices are woefully out of date, but I have all the other data about stamp issues. And, Welcome! (even though you joined before I did).  |

Moschophoros, the stamps are the 1989 Bulgaria "Cats" (Scott 3511, 3514, 3515) and one other I'm hunting down the Scott number for. |
