Bumping this old thread, as these are like miniature works of art. Here is another one from my collection...

I've been collecting for over 50 years. I have worked for a number of stamp auction houses. I have never seen these before. I have seen stamps used in collages, but nowhere near the artistry and detail of these works!! I am thoroughly impressed.

Years ago, I actually tried to make one using some damaged stamps, but I gave up when my creation looked terrible. These are a lot harder to make than you think.

Are you examples individual water colours or are eh backgrounds prints form water colours. If they were mass produced for tourists I would expect the second. Just curious

Ant -

The postcards I have in my collection are all individual watercolor drawings, not preprinted backgrounds. I have not seen these postcards mass produced, but I suppose it was possible.

I scanned and then printed out one my postcards on a sheet of paper, 8.5 by 11 inches, and it really looks nice blown up and put in a frame.

Example 1: Message dated 1923. Unmailed. Head is cut out and pasted on also. Publisher information on reverse side.

Example 2: Mailed from Hong Kong 1932. With original watercolor around the cutouts

A U.S. example! Reverse side is blank, likely mailed within an envelope.

These postcards and type of art are really impressive. I've found a new thing to be on the lookout for: macerated stamp postcards, specifically Chinese/Hong Kong ones. If anyone knows the Chinese characters to look for that would be greatly appreciated, although I'm not sure if many Chinese sites would even appear in Google search results.

agandau's original post has especially fine detail and is very pretty in its composition.

To anyone with these postcards, are there any cut-up stamps original so that there's texture to the card? If so, I'm impressed by how it stays glued. If not, I wonder where the original art ended up.

Salmonderella -

These are made with real postage stamps that are raised off the card, so yes, you can feel the texture of the stamps. Each one is an original piece of art. All of mine shown above in this thread are this way. They are not prints. They are all originals. You buy one and you own the original art. The craftsmanship of cutting, glueing, and painting is very impressive. I am not sure how they neatly glued each stamp piece down without making a big mess, but they are firmly stuck down right out to the points.

Searching for them on ebay takes some creative searching, but search for "China collage postcard" and you will see more of these cards.

Linus, thank you for sharing your collection! These are even more impressive knowing that each one is uniquely made. I do see some on ebay with those keywords. It seems like "macerated stamps" also works as a keyword.

Such odd timing for this thread to come up as I have found several while going through this large China/Japan/Hong Kong collection. I didn't really know much about them but this thread helped a lot. They are quite something to see in person.
