There are no references to this cancellation in United States Cancellations 1845-1869 by Hubert C. Skinner and Amos Eno or in The Waterbury Cancellations 1865-1890 by Paul C. Rohloff. As this stamp was first issued in 1873, I didn't really expect to find anything in the first book, but you never know. |

This one is not in the Stamp Smarter website's fancy cancel database. That does not necessarily mean that it is fake. |

I was watching a Sir David Attenborough documentary, last evening, If that be a Madagasgar Radiated Tortoise you are holding, he suggests it may be extinct on Madagasgar within 20 years. |

thank you for answer.
Rod222, The photo dates back 10 years and I can confirm that it is a radiated turtle. Fortunately this species is now less collected in the wild, because young specimens are available that are reproduced in European or American farms. until 20 years ago they were only catches. I have an Italian friend who has opened a tortoises protection center in Madagascar. In Madagascar they are widespread, in every village and rural homes as "pet". He buys tortoises or receives them as a gift, and takes care of the reproduction and safeguard. The idea is to grow the babies and reintroduce specimens into the wild. poaching is still practiced

Thank you. Good news is always welcomed. It was also mentioned there may have been a example that reached 130 years of age, if true, the longest living animal on the planet.

Might pay to send to the PF for a cert. Either way it would probably only cost the minimum. |

On page 156 of Cancellations and Killers of the Banknote Era by Cole (available as a downloadable PDF from uspcs.org) there is a turtle cancel from Turtle Creek Pa. It is in the style of your cancel, but with a negative "T" at the center. I am not sure that I believe either cancel. Turtle Creek is a real place located in Alleghany County PA. |

By PF he means The Philatelic Foundation in NYC. They are a not for profit organization that gives certificates of genuineness for philatelic items, normally US material, but some foreign material as well. Their web site is here: http://www.philatelicfoundation.org/ |
