A lot of these things come down to the cost of punishment. It can cost anywhere from 25,000 to 50,000 dollars to incarcerate somebody for a year. I was involved in the construction of prisons in the 90's and I had one project double in cost to 74 million dollars because of environmental issues (just imagine the Green New Deal in place) and the need to air condition the entire facility because unconditioned was not code compliant because it was located next to an Air Force Base which caused the decible level from aircraft operations to exceed Federal requirements for construction reimbursement and on and on and on and on........ |

The article mentions that she stole the money and gift cards to pay bills and support her children. The judge may have taken into consideration the consequences of putting her in jail and putting the kids into foster care or whatever other alternative is available versus granting probation with home detention to allow her to continue to care for the kids. Nor rationalizing the sentence - just trying to figure out why the judge did what she did. Would there be court records or such that would shed light on this? |

Stole to "pay bills and support her children"...Hmmm, I wonder what she spent her paycheck on then. Guess the rest of the postal workers don't have bills or support their kids... |

Perhaps most other postal workers are married. If she is a single mother it would make a big difference. |

Please!! Postal workers are not on the bottom of the totem pole pay scale wise. Plain and simple she is a thief. There is no excuse for stealing. Plenty of "government programs" to help struggling single moms. |

You cannot assess a person's criminal behavior based solely upon salary as rationale. People of all income levels commit crimes all time and we see examples every day about an uneven application of justice. |

Quote: Court records said Smith admitted to stealing mail about one or two days per week, taking cash to pay bills and take care of her children. Smith said financial strains and marital issues prompted the thefts. The assessment occurring in this thread is whether the defendant's excuses are credible. The defendant has asserted that her income level was the reason, not people posting here. |
