This forum is for members to upload and comment on scans of groups of various shades of an issue of Australian KGV heads. Members are encouraged to upload their own shade comparison groupings of this fascinating stamp. The first group I will start with is the CofA watermark four pence olive issues of 1933-1937.

Thanks for posting the browns Rod222, they are certainly an interesting challenge.
The lower two rows look like they are ACSC 84, black-brown shades - do you have a separate page of those? |

Cannot really help any further FDS, Here's the thing, I just collected random KG5 sidefaces, for years,as they came in sundry lots. I have an Album 2" thick of just sidefaces. I had no interest, until a fellow collector made an acquaintance from the next town over. He is a Kangaroo and sideface addict, hence my growing interest. I have 5 pages of the Brown's , most are red brown, this is how I collect them, the 2d Red and the Penny Green, I would have hundreds if not a 1000. Never sorted them for shades as yet, only owned the Brusden White for just under a year. I guess "a work in progress" (I find this method good for "flyspecking" passing over each stamp in turn) 5 pages of browns....... |

Here are my Sc# 118 (with a Sc#73 interloper) Probably the scan does not show up shades, but looking at them here, I can see Olive, brown olive, rusty olive and Citron (my verbiage) I find "shading" dodgy with used stamps, you never know what their history has been. |

Ha! Good luck with those 1d Greens!
The 4d olives look good - shading will seem less dodgy once you start to group them together - I find that there are clear gradations, producing quite distinct and interesting sub-groups, especially after checking them on the scanner after the natural light sorting. |

You be the judge of computer screen colours, this is one of the few "Russet Brown" stamps I could find. Appears to have a lot of red in the mix, bordering on "claret". |

Not perfect from a second-hand scan, but with a bit of rearranging, your 4d olives can be graduated from light green olive through olive then yellow olive and finally a brownish olive. |

FairDinkum: Since you started off with the CrownCofA watermark, I'll do likewise. Here are my 1d Green shades. Lots more to come. Frank. |

You Sir, are a dedicated collector That is one step beyond / deeper than "flyspecking" Not sure I would have the patience. |

Rod: Quote: this is one of the few "Russet Brown" stamps I could find. Here are my (or rather, my father's) shades for the 1˝d browns. That ebay stamp looks more like my father's interpretation of PURPLE BROWN. But then my eyes leave a lot to be desired these days. I find that the subtle differences in shades only show themselves when you see them together as a group. I would have thought that the stamp you have shown is a little too purple for russet brown. Frank. |

Frank, kudos to your dad, for such a nice display, I have not seen prior, reference to "types of crown" in the watermark before. Dad's "Tudor Crown" if his images are correct must follow the corollory of being 2nd Watermark.
I think we need to differentiate colours of these with the printings. 1918-1919 ACSC #83 Black-Brown Purple Black Reddish Black Grey Black
1919-1922 ACSC #85 (colour changed from Black-Brown due to difficulty detecting postmarked stamps)
Deep Red-Brown Purple Brown Chocolate Russet Brown. |

A novice attempt. I have 120 Three halfpenny 2nd Watermark, 16 are Black Brown. All Black Browns look identical, no colour difference These are just guesses. Sc#24 |
