Interesting Gabon Item

I just ran across this item and thought it was interesting;

Great item! Note that the year date is upside down in the cancel and should be (19)16.

Normally no preference is mentioned but I would think collecting mint stamps in the tropics is not the greatest idea. I also note that his wants are mostly from the 1860s and later. Could he already have had what he wanted from the classic issues?

You have good philatelic eyes to see that upside down cancel, I completely missed it.

Faure died in 1961.date of birth unknown.Stationed in N'gomo from 1912-17.
His functions are not known for sure ,although he was a pasteur.In the registers of the "Mission Evangelique Francaise" only mention: "*accountant? artisan?" (*supplemental responsabilities)

If he had the means to print out a list like this ,he surely had access to a printing press...

I note in his last paragraph that he mentions a lot about surcharged stamps. As perf12 mentioned, if he had access to a printing press is it possible that the supply of surcharged stamps could be easily met? It made me think and ask is it possible?

No1philatelist, that is a possibility since he writes that he can supply hundreds of surcharged stamps.. one should be prudent in these matters...

First, I don't think he mentions "a lot" about surcharged stamps, he talks about the 1912 Gabon issue specifically, one of which is used for the mailing above. If you look it up, it is not a particularly expensive set today because it is not very high in face value.

You are saying he took 1fr, 2fr and 5fr Navigation and Commerce stamps, likely worth a fair amount then and now, and overprinted them 10 centimes for a huge loss in Scott catalog value and real value. That makes no sense. There are no forged surcharges on forged stamps of the issue. There may be faked errors of the issue, but he was not offering anything like that.

He writes: Gabon 1886 rare specimens (1886 are surcharged 5,10,25,50,75. all high cat value. (These surcharges have been forged considerably).

Perf12, interesting data to know. So I asked a question of possibility, and there are forged surcharges of Gabon out there. Did any of his covers ever have any forged overprints on them, that were acknowledged by a specialist, society or group. And was it ever known where they came from?

There are no forged overprints on the stamps of Faure covers....
The only way would be using Fournier forgeries and overprinting them.

Forged (stamps & or overprints) were mainly by Fournier of the early 1886 & 1887 issues.
He did forge the Navigation & Commerce stamps quiet extensively also.

As of this moment the card shown in the original post above is on ebay with a current bid of $3.25. It will be interesting to see what it finally goes for. The one shown by Perf12 that is for sale by a dealer for $45 seems to be a very high price but in an auction one never knows.
