They are both early shades of Unitrade / Scott 17a (violet). The shade varies immensely over the course of the issue. What is the question please.

My question is:

Both of these stamps are either a 16, 17, 17a, 17b, or 17e. I was just trying to figure out their Scott #'s

I am hoping one of them is a #16, they both have 11#190; Perforations.

Thank you.

Looks like 17b indeed, 16 is a dark brown, described as "black brown". Not to mention much rarer.

Your first stamp is a little beaten up, but 2nd one isn't too rough.

Believe it or not I've seen a certificated #16 that looks like the 2nd one on top. Same shade.

Very hard to believe and not certain how the experts came to such a conclusion. Think it was a VGG cert.

If I can find the screenshot among tens of thousands I will upload it to this thread.

17b is still not bad. I am still wondering if these two stamps are different Scott number's. The one on the right could just be faded? Here's hoping it could be a 16, fingers crossed. Might send it into AP, just wanting to confirm before going through the process. Thank you.

The black and chocolate browns from the first printing orders (POs) are much, much darker in vignette and background. None of above pictured are 16's, sorry.

The second PO is comprised of maroon / deep red purple shades, then the balance of early perf 11 3/4 printings are a transition from violet to brown.

Please provide a link

I might be wrong, but right stamp looks perf 12 and a greyish violet by scan.

Here are two examples of #16. The used one has a red pen cancellation. The proof pair has the "Double Epaulet" variety on the left impression. There is a 17b which is about this shade but can be identified by perforating the stamp. All the #16 stamps are perforated 11.75 all around.

That one on ebay certainly doesn't look like a 16. It even has "17" pencilled on the back.
