Can't find it in my catalogue under Venezuela or British Guiana.

Anyone know what it is?

Look in the back of the Scott listings for Venezuela, there'll be a section titled "local stamps for the state of Guayana". Your stamp is #3, though counterfeits abound.

EDIT to add: the catalog value in 2018 Scott is $19.

Thanks, codehappy. I don't have a Scott catalogue, and it's not in my Gibbons one at all - I just checked again.

So it's Guayana - I'm guessing East Guayana. Any idea why it has Venezuela's name on?

Guayana (note the extra "a") is the name of an administrative region of Venezuela, not be confused with the nation of Guyana (former British Guiana), which it does border. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guayana_Region

Both states apparently took the name from the same source: an Amerindian word meaning "land of many waters".

Great info, codehappy. Thanks again. I had it in among my Venezuela stamps and was all set to move it to British Guyana, so thanks for clarifying. (I assumed the extra A was just a spelling convention!)

I assumed it was. Anything I chance on which looks this old, I don't bother checking! It had full intact gum on the back as well, before I hinged it. I'll still have it in the album, though.

Thanks for the link.

Apparently the whole region of eastern Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana in the 17th/18th century was called "Guayana" or pick your own other spelling variant, so it's not surprising the name is all over the place today.

Kind of interesting that if you went all the way west from French Guiana to Guayana, you'd hear French, Dutch, English, and Spanish along the way, with no doubt several other native languages or creoles.
