A New Stamp Collection

Hello everyone! I am in NJ and I recently inherited a box of stamps. I am new to the stamp world. I am overwhelmed but very excited to start finding out more about these wonderful old stamps.

I haven't begun to look anything up yet, but I noticed that many(!) stamps were affixed to paper by taping over the top of the stamp. What a shame! I am concerned that even if I did have a rare or valuable stamp, that this would render it worthless. I am hoping to find out more here...everyone seems so knowledgeable. Have a great day :)

Welcome from a fellow New Jerseyan; There are a few of us here. When I first starting collecting stamps as a young child, I glued all my stamps to the pages. Live and learn. I still keep those pages, but in a separate collection. This is a knowledgable and fun group here. All of my questions have been answered. Welcome!

Welcome. The odds are the stamps do not have any significant value. In fact, most US stamps since 192O do not have much value especially when not in post office issued condition. Of course, taping stamps down would reduce any value even more.

In the US, the Scott catalog is the standard reference that is used to identify stamps and provide a reference value.
