Thanks for the feedback. No, I DO NOT use color to determine Type; no way. At first, I thought my original 6 were all Type 4 but not because of color. The colors ae hard enough alone. I approached about 100 stamps in the Type 1-4 series, first separating by watermark and then by type. However, I did notice certain scott numbers were undisputable, like the Type II 191 scott 266. Then I ran into PTSD big time, and found that I struggled id'ing Type III from Type IV.

I to have found that looking underneath the you for extended lines seemed clearest; but my PTSD rules and I get frustrated and confused. That is why I ask for help. I know it sounds weird but while I love analyzing stamps, I run into a PTSD wall at times and want to scream.

Sorry if this is too much info.

Hi jb1000056 just came across this and wasn't sure if it would be helpful for you. I don't own one, so I can't say how correct the colors are. Maybe someone else could testify on it's value. If you haven't/don't have color samples on cover maybe this is for you?

Also, I'm sure some other place might have one of these. I just happen to find it while I was pricing something else. Good luck!

jb1000056, save your money on buying "Color Identifiers". I appreciate that Swscfdc87 is trying to help, but you will find that they really are not much help at the end of the day. (In my experience, 0 help...)
They don't provide reference copy of the stamp to compare against for one... how do you know which color is the stamp you are comparing against?
And, colors change a lot over time (or at least can), and that holds true for the "color guides" as well.

Thank you for weighing in Classic, as I said I had not used one before and now I'll save my money as well. I appreciate your knowledge.
