The pictured stamp is Scott 73 from 1883.

Thea early Japan section includes examples of various postmarks/cancellations including telegraph usage. But no "T" cancellation example.

When I think of a "T" cancellation, I think "postage due". Did this usage/practice carryover to Japan, too?

It is international, agreed to by the World Postal Union. Since the language of the WPU is French, the T of Taxe is used
