redwoodrandy makes a good point when he advises you to be observant. For instance, if you look at the link you posted, it shows a different stamp to yours. Yours has a red overprint, the one in the link does not - so it's a different stamp.

In any case, the link says "the block of four" fetched $1,156. It says "blocks and strips are much rarer" than individual stamps. It points out that the single stamp only fetched $173.

I'm no expert on Turkey, but there's something about it which makes it more valuable than a normal example of that stamp. My Stanley Gibbons catalogue gives a mint value of 50p (about 70c), so this would be some sort of very rare variety.

But you don't have that one, anyway.

Asking to see your Turkey pages because I collect Turkey...somewhat extensively. You have a worldwide album - and therefore need info on more than just US/UK/Canada...

Look at the text description on that website page carefully. Note especially the words 'block of 4' - which is very different than a single stamp.

More importantly, notice the difference between the stamp on the website & your stamp. (big hint: the 'red' markings on your stamp!)

Collecting stamps...and especially trying to sell them...is about excruciating detail. (or in the case of the stamp you just posted, very obvious detail) The comments to be observant are accurate - and not intended to be derogatory. If you're serious - about collecting/selling/both - then you must pay attention & learn the details...

PS...no offense to that website...but there are numerous/multiple errors of fact on that page. Be careful of the internet! And especially the last listing, of the stamp you've mentioned. Not sure what the guy is talking about - with regards to a 'photochrom color print' (sic) - and in a 1905 catalog?? - but that stamp was first issued in 1914...

So many good sites for learning - like stampsmarter & swedishtiger, just to mention a couple obvious ones - that have to compete with nonsense like that?!!!

There are many! There are books about stamp history or production from just about any country or area. There are also many books about stamp collecting in general. Modern stamps are shamefully underdocumented in the literature, but that's gradually changing. Many of the newer books are either self-published or available free on the Internet.

If there's a particular area you're interested in, or if you want books about the general history of world stamps, people around here can give you recommendations. Linn's Stamp News published a few good books for beginner general collectors as well as US collectors, they may still be in print.

codehappy : any you would personally recommend? For example , what are your favorite books on stamps? If there are any good ( if they are bad nevermind ) free books ones let me know too, if you would like of course. I'm particularly interested in the psychology behind stamp collecting/ psychological aspects of collecting, and the long history of stamps and stamp collecting. So if you can think of any that come to mind let me know. Whatever you found a fascinating read on stamps I would like recommendation too. Cheers

Thanks for the pix. Nothing wildly exciting. Typical beginning collection of common stuff. Not nearly as complete as your US/UK/Canada. Minimal value - like maybe $5 for the whole lot. Most valuable stamp in the bunch perhaps not even from Turkey! The 1c red stamp from Turks Islands - bottom of page 8 - worth a closer look...

Think I can get the yo-yo from that website to give me $1156 for this??

Now I just have to get my book prepared for ebay , or do you think I would make more money selling the book to a collector?

Your book which you would call an "album" on ebay would be seen by collectors and dealers.

On the subject of philatelic literature, there's lots of good stuff in the realm of specialisms, real detailed histories and so on. But for the general enthusiast, patricularly newbies, I think there is a real lack - at least, every book I've seen is hard to get into.

Typically they seem to have pages and pages about printing methods, world rarities (which we'll never see) postal systems from days gone by - all fine, of course, but a little beside the point.

I am certain I could write a much better book, but time and a near certain lack of publisher, preclude it.

I'm going to first hit up this guy in my state, that buys stamps. Seems like a really nice guy on the phone by the way, and see if he will buy the album for a nice price. He asked me to send him pictures of my American, Canadian and Great Britain stamps which I haven't done yet because you guys told me those stamps are worthless, still maybe he will buy one or two for a dollar. He says after he looks at those countries stamps he will then have a look at all my other stamps to see if he finds any he likes. I might ask him if he will buy the entire album. If he doesn't buy anything I just go straight to ebay.

As for books about stamps if you don't have any recommendations I'm sure I can find something decent on Amazon.com. I read a book that had a really interesting piece about stamps but I can't remember the author.
