Recently acquired this large queen which resembles the color of the image of a 29b in Unitrade. The description however indicates color should be red lilac. This is the first one of this type that I've seen. It doesn't look like a red lilac to me. Really not much red in it at all. Am I mistaken? To me it just looks like lilac.

I know color is a tough call on a computer image but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a yay or nay on the red lilac question.

Thank you for doing that. What software tool are you using to do a color sample? It looks like something useful for this hobby.

I have a small queen with something on the back that is curious. I want to say it looks like a transfer from a stamp album but it isn't a clean enough image to say for certain. Might be set off? No color to it though. Any opinion welcome and appreciated.

gettinold..Your Queen stamp has a slight OFFSET...Nothing major.

You might try to find a software for your machine..I do not use Windows.

Robert

Here is a link if you use Windows...There are a few there for you to pick from.

If you want more software, may I suggest GIMP and GWYDDION.

Hi

I am fairly sure your stamp is a 29i (dull or greyish purple shade) but would need a scan of the back to be sure. An endless discussion is possible, so I will be brief here.

The shade of the issued stamp changed from slate / deep blue in the late 1880s to dull purplish and violet shades (29i / 29 in catalogue). The paper used in that period was uniformly a poorer quality, off-white, coarse in texture (I'd compare it to newsprint with ragstock added), paper grain in vertical orientation, usually shows embossing on back.

The 29b is early, printed before mid-1868 and used into the mid 1870s.

Unitrade's cataloguing is licensed from the Scott numbering system, which falls short of accurately describing the issue.

I'm using Windows. I will check out your links. It would be great to be able to examine colors in greater detail.

The back of the stamp has hinge remnants and gum. I'm thinking of soaking it.

Soaking gum off that stamp is a good idea.

Looks better without the hinge.

Am sure it is a 29i, thanks for posting.

I'd bet, despite the imperfections, you like it better now. Being a used stamp, washing off the old toned gum and hinge remnants improves it.
