Correct. So is it the "E" in NEW or the "E" in WALES? I don't see a following W or S. Hmm.

Not having the full dandy roll image, I am at a loss to advise.
Your stamp does not fit either, from the part image of the dandy roll I posted.
Could be E of "POSTAGE" ?

Your stamp shows the E of POSTAGE from the lower right hand corner of the sheet.

Here is part of the image from Basset Hull:

Also important to note is that this paper was not manufactured for the square diadem plates. Because of this, marginal lettering is not unusual to see on the diadems but not common at all on the DLR stamps.

The great Guybon John Hutson doesn't use the phrase 'very rare' often but describes the marginal lettering on stamps from the single line numeral watermark paper thusly.

On that paper and the Crown over NSW issues, NEW SOUTH WALES was at the top and bottom of the sheets.

Yours, however, may be from the stamp duty paper which had NEW SOUTH WALES at the sides of the sheet, matching the orientation of your watermark.

Regarding the De La Rue issues on that paper, Hutson states on page 71:

"Owing to the plates not fitting the watermarks they often show portions of the large marginal letters NEW SOUTH WALES and STAMP DUTY, and a few stamp escape the watermark altogether."

I think you're 100% correct fairdinkumstamps.

The coarse print is one indicator, but the sealer was there's just enough of the cancel to prove it's a White D16 type. I'll have to see if I can pin down the individual device. On a quick look I think it's either 1 or 20.

I can't see George's other thread, so for those who might visit here later, the watermark look to be Crown over NSW type 1, Stanley Gibbons watermark SG 36, found on these Two Pence De La Rue stamps issued from 1871-1884.

The T and A of POSTAGE can be seen. The cancellation is White B9d. See page 89 of his book.

The problem in confirming this was that Hutson (p.55) says the marginal watermark is NEW SOUTH WALES.

This block from Abacus (auction 137 lot 51) proves that the marginal watermark is NEW SOUTH WALES POSTAGE.

Very nice find Bobby De La Rue. So, assuming it is perf 13 and to exclude the possibility of SG 210, that type of obliterator was never used after 1871?
