Hi all
I understood from all the reference books that this stamp should be brown.
Can anyone help with information.

Thanks

SG and Scott have two main colors. SG lists them as maroon and violet-brown. Robson Lowe says for this series that there are all sorts of shades, and they'll only mention a second one when it is so distinctive as to warrant separate identification.

All of that doesn't explain yours, though. I believe yours is a color changeling. Probably because pigments in that end of the spectrum weren't always all that stable? I've seen the 1sh in light blues and almost turquoise, too.

My 2d.

ETA: When I say two main colors, in each instance there is a main catalogue entry and then a second color as a variety. So, SG 50 for maroon and SG 50c for violet-brown.

Thanks for the reply.
In all honesty, I'm not sure what the term "changeling" means!
If you could explain - would be appreciated.
Are you suggesting brown turned to green over time due to conditions ie. sunlight etc?
Thanks

From Stamp Smarter glossary:

Quote:
Changeling/Color Changeling
A stamp whose color has been changed through a chemical reaction, either natural or artificial.

https://stampsmarter.org/Learning/Glossary_C.html

Sometimes sunlight or excessive exposure to UV light can cause color changes, more often changelings are caused by chemical solvents or bleaches, intentional or unintentional.

Wow, great information! I didn't realize 'color changelings' were a thing - answered a bunch of questions for me that I hadn't even got around to asking!
