1854-57 perforated 16. Could be large or small crown watermark.

Cancelled with Dubus type 5 East Central District obliterator.

I think the check letters are alphabet II but would hope someone could confirm this.

I'd need a larger scan to determine if this is Die I or II.

Thanks for your help.
Thats great information .
I will try to take a close up scan
for a clearer picture.

Thought i'd post a picture of the back of the stamp. I can't see a watermark.
What's the best method to look for the watermark mentioned ?.

Hold the stamp up to the light, or place face down on a black surface and see if you can make out the watermark.

As already mentioned the stamp is Alphabet 2 and I think that all the perforated 16 stamps on blued paper are only that alphabet.
Three ID's are possible ... S.G.17, S.G.21, S.G.26 so watermark and Die is necessary to identify.

Hello again,
Following your advice,i've hopefully, managed to get a clearer picture using a black, back ground.
I also held the stamp up to a light but I couldn't see a watermark.

Martina - if the watermark isn't visible against a light, most of us use a few drops of lighter fuel on the back, in a black dish or tray

Swan is probably the commonest brand here now.

Thanks for that tip.
I have a black, glass ashtray that I could use & will go to the shops tomorrow to buy some fluid.
I haven't used that method before. Should be interesting.
I'll keep you all posted .

Hello,
Sorry I havn't got back to the forum sooner,i wasnt well last week & im now having a nightmare trying to find either Swan or Ronsol lighter fluid in the shops.
I've seen the cheaper brand Bull but thought best not to use that ?
Looks like i'll have to order some online.

The ciggie counter in Tesco should have it. I wouldn't be choosy about the brand myself, though!

GeoffHa,
Thanks for your reply.I've seen the Bull brand about in most of the shops, but wasnt to sure as I havn't seen that brand being mentioned or recommended by the forum members.
Maybe I could try a different brand on 1 of my not so good stamps to see if it has the same effect as the other brands mentioned.
Thanks for the tip
