Help With Olympic Games Collection

I need some help with identifying best suited auction [US or abroad]to appraise and possibly sell core fragment of my father's collection [part that won medals in international exhibits]. It covers philatelic features of the Olympic games: stamps, special cancellations, postal stationary, etc. This part of the collection covers 1896-1956 with a focus on organizing countries. Father was very passionate about collecting and authored many articles and two books in Russia. It was a very private passion that he did not share with anyone in the family: we are considering finding a new loving home for his collection. It's an impressive collection. Not your typical olympic collection. It will sell easily & there are numerous auction houses that would take it for sale.

Do a search on this board & you'll see comments about all of them. The spectrum - high end to low end - would look something like this:

Siegel
Cherrystone
Kelleher
Rasdale
ebay

Others will chime in with comments. You can also look at Stamp Auction Network, which will show you a bunch of different auction houses.

Search for Journal of Sports Philately in the net - there are single issues of this specialized Olympic philately magazine (US-based). It has lots of links to specialized auctions for such kind of material.

Thank you very much for your guidance. I looked up the auctions you listed and Siegel + Cherrystone are near me and seem very solid. Siegel seemed to have mostly high value items. Hope our collection is up to their value targets. Kelleher seem to have a ton of auctions, but do not offer too many collections.

Do you think I need it independently appraised, or should I trust the reserve estimates from the auctioneers? I am guessing that it should be OK, but want to confirm.

I'll also look into auctions listed in the Journal of Sports Philately and try to find 1-2 specialists who may attract more relevant audience. I found Olympic collecting library and discovered that dad's published a 3rd book in 1986. I never even saw that one!

Do you think I should look at 1-2 auctions in UK? I do not know if Olympic games market is stronger in US or Europe.

I'd stick to US just because of shipping costs. Kelleher has a "Collections" auction every 3 months and draws a lot of attention. Siegel is very good too if they will take it. Sometimes an auction house will offer to buy it outright but I would avoid this and make sure they auction it.

Some very nice early items from Greece. Highly unlikely that Siegel would touch it. Forget Rasdale. Cherrystone would be interested but they do not have the bidder turnout that my recommended firm for this, Kelleher's has.

Thank you. Yes, father was very passionate about collecting and sports. He picked up great handwriting from his father who survived in WW2 thanks to his handwriting: got pulled from the front line in 1941 to serve in the headquarters.
