Hello,

I have found these 4 stamps in an album that had only Australian stamps, mainly colonies. I wonder why the collector would have done them into this Australian collection, no other stamps are from other countries.

So this is a good opportunity to ask: were any GB stamps used in Australia, or is there any Australian connection of the cancels that you see here?

One cancel is a horseshoe cancel perhaps, the one at the botton a postal stationery? (it is on hard thick paper)

On the XIX century a lot of British people went to Australia. Hence, "the Australian connection" of these stamps. I don't think that any British stamp has ever been used in Australia. Why should it? Australian colònies had their own stamps since very early times.

Hi stamperix,

These are all London postmarks.

The second one is "hooded circle" type with "LONDON" in a scroll sitting on top of a circle.

You can see the "LO" on the right-hand postmark.

thank you both very much. Ok, so it was not because of a real connection to Australia. Maybe the collector thought the postal card was cancelled in "NSW".

Common. I find Matchbox labels, confectionery seals, cigar bands, and all sorts in albums, collectors just stuff stamps anywhere when in a hurry.
Expect the unexpected. Makes collecting fun.

The middle one at the top has "AU 11 9" in the postmark. Maybe he thought AU stood for Australia? (It means August, of course.)
