Hello. New To Stamp Collecting And Have These Old Stamps

Hello everyone. I didn't inherit these stamps, but I bought them at an estate sale because I am a big history buff and these stamps where gorgeous. All I know is that they are called First Day Issue or something like that.

It's a complete book with a slipcase that has hundreds of stamps like these in it. If anyone can tell me what exactly they are and their worth, I would greatly appreciate it.

After going through all of these, I had to drop off a package at the PO and saw some really cool stamps, which I'm posting here as well. What is the best way to store these new stamps? Are there plastic sleeves? Thank you for any and all answers.

I don't collect US but can tell you the covers you bought are exceedingly common and likely have very limited market value.

I reckon to pay an average of 10p per cover for modern FDCs, and that's what I receive if I sell them on ebay - but I'm happy to have them for the areas I collect. I find them more interesting than simply looking at a page of used stamps.

There are lots of ways of storing stamps - in pre-printed albums, in albums that you make yourself, in stock-books or on stock-pages. Depends what is right for you.

First Day Covers (FDC) like yours were cancelled on the day they were issued. They were made in very large quantities and marketed as 'collectibles'. They are many more cover then are collectors, so value is not high. But they often become family heirlooms and certainly can be interesting. It's great that you have purchased some additional stamps. Philately is a great hobby and is a good gateway into the history and culture of our world.

Until you decide if you will take up the hobby in a large way, you can purchase 'stock sheets' as a way to safely store your new purchases. They come in all kinds of foramts include manila or the popular 'Vario' (brand name) sheets. They have 'pockets' which will hold the stamps/blocks/sheets.

You should also keep your covers and stamps in a stable environment, avoiding high heat and high humidity.
