Event Covers ... For Events That Folks Did Not Even Know Were Events

Event covers have been created for all manner of events:

Philatelic ... club meetings, exhibitions, the works

Hobbies ... covers issued by our brethren coin collectors, auto/rail modelers, et al

Postal ... branch post office openings, closings, first days

Terrestrial ... railway/highway first runs, last runs, re-runs

Naval ... launchings, deployments, homecomings, circumnavigations, ports-of-call, polar (anything)

Aviation ... first flights, airfield openings, races, competitions, exhibitions

Space ... (too many micro-categories to count, let alone list)

Olympics ... so many stamps that there must be a zillion covers

Jamborees ... surely the merit badge means that there are plenty of jamboree event covers?

Each of these categories has its own websites, specialty societies, literature, checklists, forum threads.

But what about the singularities?

What about events that folks did not even know were events?

For example: institution anniversaries, civil war re-enactments, demolitions ... do I know?

There's also a plethora of birth and death anniversaries covers for famous and semi-famous people. There's also the RPO event covers and tons of ship and sub related event covers. Ship and sub covers stretch from keel laid covers, commissioning covers all the way to decommissioning covers and whatever was in between.

What one might call "death watch" covers are another category.

John Wayne died on June 11, 1979 at UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA. This cover was posted on the day of his death from the city in which he died. Honestly it's kinda morbid to think about someone setting around in LA waiting for the man to die so they could make a cover...

The Iwo Jima stamp for a blowhard who spent the war cowering under the table on the Paramount lot while his contemporaries were fighting in North Africa, Western Europe and the Far East is singularly inappropriate.

Actually, not so inappropriate: the design of the stamp is taken from the photograph of the staged re-enactment of the flag-raising.
