Robert, do you have any of these ? And your list brings up a question. Why open an office for just one day ?

Using U.S. experience, I suspect many of the earliest less-than-a-month offices were never actually opened. The time required to communicate back and forth, get employees appointed and bonded, etc., I believe many failed to accomplish all the requirements and were never put into actual operation. I would apply some common sense and take the PO list with a grain of salt as to "operational" validity unless there are additional records such as stamp sales records or similar documentation. |

Records are taken from Canadian archive records John...Accordingly accurate...But as you say why open for only one day, but wow if I found one. Peter..I have not at this time spent time looking for these cancels...But I will keep an eye open. Robert |

Robert, I understand fully where the cited records are coming from, with whatever transcription accuracy there is. I am also saying that one should look for corroborating postal records of site application records, $ returns, PM appointments and bond returns, salaries/compensation paid, route contracts, newspaper announcements, etc., to provide a second or third source of data that these office actually opened or were just "on paper" for a few days. Be skeptical. |

Would be an interesting project to look for some of these. I've started looking for old cancels from my town and surrounding villages in SE Kent Ontario. The villages only have a couple hundred residents each so is proving a bit of a good challenge. If you find anything for Morpeth, Highgate, Palmyra or Ridgetown Ontario let me know :) |

Quote: Records are taken from Canadian archive records John...Accordingly accurate. They may be quoted accurately, but even then they need to be taken with a grain of salt. From the checklist of British Columbia post offices: Quote: The first date shows when the Office was officially established. This may or may not be tha date on which postal service actually began. The second date indicates, as far as possible, when postal services ceased. This may differ by up to a year from the date when the Post Office was permanently closed by an official order. As an example, if you read the official post office guides, the post office of Abbey in Saskatchewan is listed as opening under transactions for August, September, and October 1913, i.e. sometime in that three month period, but you can't get any more accurate than that. And that is the official record. Jan |
