It is rare for me to post because I don't feel I have much to offer. But I read posts and responses whenever I can, and I'm always amazed by the wealth of information being generously shared by members here. Your collective knowledge is staggering.

Now I'm seeking information, and my first thought was SCF. I have an early US stamp with a blue star cancellation that I'm trying to trace the origins of. I'm mostly in the dark about cancellations; my hands (and head) are full just learning all I can about stamps.

I've attached an image, and I'm hoping that someone out there can and will guide me to a source, whether a comprehensive archive or a person with comprehensive knowledge of the subject, where I can learn more without spending hundreds of dollars. Authentication can be extremely expensive.

I thank you in advance for your time and consideration, and hope to hear from someone who will shed light on the subject. I will greatly appreciate whatever information you can offer. Cheers.

Have you tried this link http://stampsmarter.com/features/Fa...sicView.html
Select 'View By Subject', there are 184 star cancels listed.

Being such a generic shape makes verifying this cancel very difficult but you might also take a look thought cover databases like Philamercury https://www.philamercury.com/search.php

Check the back. If ink has penetrated the paper, the cancel would be suspect.

Thank you, 51studebaker, and cfrphoto, for your insights. The ink has not penetrated the paper; in fact, it is difficult to distinguish on the back with the stamp lying face down on a white blotter paper.

I'll follow those links. Thanks again.

PostalPete

Thank you for your post. I dug out one of my blue star cancels with a small portion of a postmark. I can not offer any additional advice regarding the origins of different types of cancels but wanted to share this image as it might be of interest to some members of the forum.

Morning Postal Pete and all,

You pose a great postal history question that, unfortunately, could only be answered if the stamp had been left on the cover it was mailed on.

Dear community,

I am 45 year old collector from Germany and need some help with some postmarks from the United States. The picture below shows some stamps that I found in very old bundles. I suppose these are quite common fancy oder killer cancels but that topic seems to be much more complicated than I expected.

So I would be very happy if someone could give me a first guess (are there some postmarks that deserve further examination)?

Thank you very much an best greetings

Roman

1st row, 5th stamp
4th for, 1st stamp
A great SON cancel in the middle of bottom row.

Please scan them individually and post some high resolution scans or pictures.
