I have a small lot of approximately 65 mint Fiume stamps from 1918 - 1924. My presumption is they are most likely forgeries (although they sure look like good forgeries if that is what they are). As I do not collect Fiume the plan is to sell them on e commerce. Is there a standard rule of thumb for pricing known forgeries?
Thanks in advance for your guidance!!
Paul

Thanks for the quick response Randy. I had already visited both of the references you provided as well as a search here and could not find anything that suggested valuation. Best guess, given the semi scarce and high incidence of forgeries is all mine are forgeries. I am trying determine if they have any valuation in the philatelic world.
Thanks again!
Paul

Hey Paul,

It depends on what kind of forgeries they are.
If they are so-called "Postal forgeries", forgeries produce during the actual span of usage, they can be really rare and scarce. Note however that these are SUPER-specialist items, and the market for these is extremely thin. But if 'real' forgeries they can commend upwards in the multiple thousands of dollars.

If they are later (convincing) forgeries, it is dependable on:

-The quality, the better the forgeries condition the more they can commence.
-the rarity of the base stamp, the rarer the base stamp, the more people cant afford it and will look for a replacement.
-The maker, some forgeries are dependant on the maker, this however is hard to determine.

I would say the regular forgeries are worth $2-$10, and for the most special its a more personal matter, it depends on the person.

Hope this helps !

-Julius

It depends on what stamps your talking about ,the first issues ,with the overprint on Hungary stamps are very cheap because so many people made them ,there is something like 15 different types of fakes so very few specialist can really know which are real without having them in front of them.

You need to put them on here to know which stamps your talking about .

This may be of some interest to this thread but I'm not sure. I guess I don't have any information for the OP on evaluation and I checked the sites listed but was confused as to which of the pictured examples were forgeries or real. Just the same I was curious as to if a forger would forge a doubled overprint as in this stamp. One overprint is of actual different denomination as the "original". My apologies if this is off topic. Finally got to the scanner. This is a sampling of the stamps from the original post. A couple of used and the remainder MH. I assume all are forgeries but sounds like even some of those may be worth more than a few cents each. Any and all input as to authenticity and value is greatly appreciated.

No they are not all forgeries ,for some they are common and no reason to forge them ,as mention before by me all those Hungary stamps are most likely fakes .On some of those above the value depends on the paper ,white or gray .

Thanks for the scan. I generally agree with floortrader. The overprints on Hungarian stamps and FRANCO overprints are commonly forged and are worth very little. Both groups of those here are too small size here to evaluate but at least some are obvious forgeries. Most potential buyers of this lot would figure those stamps from little to nothing. Of course, you could offer the forgeries to Julius at the bargain price of $1.50 each by his figuring.

wheelman, where do you get that all Fiume issues are forged? Nowhere in any catalog does it say this, nor is it true. And there is something to be said for someone knowingly selling forgeries, and that is not good. Of course, it's done all the time, but imagine trying to dispute it when the seller says they didn't get the lot and demands a refund and you go to ebay or the post office telling them you were selling forgeries.

stampwolf, no such error is listed, so someone made a (bad) fake of something that doesn't exist or something else happened. That "something else" could possibly be transfer of the 0.02c overprint to the gum of another stamp, with some of that being transferred again to your stamp. That could explain why the second overprint, which appears genuine, is so weak. If so, then the second overprint might not be permanent, either. This really needs in-person examination. If you feel brave, send it in to the APS for expertizing.
