Take a look at this picture of a cover I posted...Looks like cancel date 7 days before the stamp was issued....Could be ERD (earliest recorded date)...? CANCEL DATE: March 26.1868ISSUE DATE : APRIL 1.1868Robert

Interesting! I'm no expert... not even close. But the 6's in both the day and year dates look different, to me. The 6 in the year looks as if it where an inverted 9. Could the year slug be 180 out? I just tried to do a side-by-side comparison but the picture quality got really grainy.
On the Postal Administration picture why is there a black diagonal line through the lower right hand 1? |

Ah! So it's like a copyright mark or something similar. I get it. Thanks. |

The black line on the corner of the stamp is an image control. In this case the Canadian Postal Admin. controls the right's to that image if someone may use the image without authorization! |

Definitely no expert on these but I've come across stamps postmarked prior to the release and often just chalk it up to someone not updating the date. I don't know much about the early postmark methods but I assume they are on a dial of some sort? Always interesting regardless! |

Hi Robert,
It is an interesting cover. Unfortunately, errors were occasionally made in the insertion of date slugs. It would help if there was an arrival mark to confirm the date.
The year date must be correct since that hammer was only used until November 1868.

I have seen that piece and examined in person. In the interests of disclosure, it is not a cover but a front. Presumably it was mailed as a 1c printed matter rate. I'd like it more if the stamp were cancelled with the date end of the duplex, and had reservations when I examined it, but it's a nice enough survivor.
Are you the owner? It sold at Eastern some time ago,
When I saw the original piece, the town slug of the duplex was not enhanced with black dots. Is that an electronic enhancement on your part?
To the best of my knowledge, it is an ERD (earliest recorded date of use) thus far but there are two other March 26ths I know of.
Early dates on classic Canada stamps tend to be valuable, as they are real postal uses and not cancelled to order (CTO). |

OK thanks. That front sold for over $2000 if I recall. I had a pleasant chat about it at the time with someone at Eastern. |
