1907 issue honoring Major General Antonio Macias. 50 centavos. Scott 238. Listed as grey blue/black. However, I have an example that is purple/black.

Is this a genuine variety?

1954 - 56 "Portrait" series. Twelve issues. Scott 519 - 528.

Appears there are shade varieties within this series. Is this correct? And if so, another Scott oversight?

Thank you.

Macias - 1/2/07 issue is black/slate; 1/2/10 issue is black/violet.
From memory, various shades in the '50s series (the designs were also used in the '60s). Probably not regarded as significant by mainstream catalogues.

Thank you, Geoff. Although there isn't a note re the second Macias issue, I should have caught that one.

Will be adopting your terminology re "mainstream" catalogue. Sounds much nicer than "damn Scott".

Retrieved my Cuban stamps from behind a large chest (bedding, not The Rock or Jayne Mansfield). I seem to have had a go at adding a few shades etc of the Portraits - of course, these aren't always quite as evident in the later cold light of day.

Geoff...

Thank you for the "well-rounded" description.

IMO the series includes shade varieties. A specialist may disagree.

Placed my duplicates in a glassine for further examination on some future date.

Cheers.
