I have looked at the back of the stamp with a light source facing the front, and the only black markings that I can see are from where the stamp has been marked on the front during the stamping process.

Hi,
Your stamp has paper still attached to it, you would need to soak this off to be able to see any setoff.

Are there any tips on how to soak a stamp and remove the paper on the back correctly and safely?

Thanks,
Dan

Clear, cool water and allow it soak; chances are the excess paper will float off by itself. It may need to a bit of 'persuasion', but be careful since the wet stamp will be soft and tear easily.
After soaking, place face down on a paper towel if you do not have a drying book.
