Hi, Here is a pic of three China Scott #316 (A45) 8 "cent" stamps with overprints. While I can match up the top overprints, I have been unable to do the bottom. My resources are Scott's and Stanley Gibbons, and ebay/Google and I'm thinking these may be either revenue or savings stamps or some other non mainstream variety. Your help is greatly appreciated!

These are Japanese occupation of Meng Chiang (Inner Mongolia).(The upper 2 characters 5mm high). The first one looks like Scott 2N127 from 1945,although the characters are very smudgy. The other two with the bottom characters(50c) in black are not listed in Scott for the A45 type (2N108).so…possible forgery? |

As Mobilman44 likely already knows, the stamp with the red overprint is not 2N127 or a forgery of it; the leftmost red character is not "yuan". I can't read the red character of value. |

It could be a half face value surcharge. |

The leftmost stamp is probably 50c (also), but the others are NOT half face value (uppr right is 50c, bottom is 10c). The surcharged parts are not the same typeface/style as the catalog-listed stamps, either. |

Hi, Thank you all so much for your input.
From what I gather, are these just not "cataloged"? By that I mean, do they have appropriate spaces in the Steiner pages? Or in the Scotts/Gibbons catalogues?
Thank you again!

The top two characters (Meng Chiang) look legit. However, the currency overprint (the two bottom characters) looks suspicious. And there is no "50c"/"30c" over 8c overprint issued. I think they are all forgeries.

I certainly am not surprised if they are forgeries. I do question "why"? I realize they were printed in another country and another time, but it seems like forging them was more trouble than they were worth. Then again, maybe I'm just naïve about that.
OK, so if they are forgeries, are they worth keeping or should they be trashed.
Thank you,
Mobilman44 |

Mobilman44, there are people on this forum that collect these. Please do not destroy them,

I don't the motivation of forging those stamps. But no stamp should be ever destroyed even they are altered. :) |

I think perf12 found the right article but unfortunately I can find no images for the clandestine surcharges. The motivation is the "conversion" of 8c stamps into higher values, albeit so badly done that it would be obvious to postal officials. Mobilman44, you might send the scan to Steven Frumkin who wrote the article that perf12 referenced. Frumkin is a real expert. I do not have a contact addy for you. Anyone? Snail mail addy here, hopefully current: https://www.geocities.ws/stamplink/...lr/us/or.htm |

Nice stamp from 1945.Yours is quiet genuine ("yuan"),dollar on the left; "one" on the right. It's not quiet certain the other stamps are forgeries.. |
