I'm having a hard time identifying this stamp because it's on hard white paper. I think it's vermilion or maybe carmine vermilion. I do not see a diagonal line under the scroll ( but could just be I'm going blind)...

I'm guessing it's a Scott 178? Any opinions?

Stamp smarter says Scott 178 is on hard white paper. My Scott catalogue says 178 is on yellowish wove paper.

178 = HARD YELLOWISH WOVE 183 = SOFT POROUS

Some watermark fluid or lighter fluid would be helpful in seeing the characteristics of the paper.

If the pic were of better quality the color could help as well.

Based on the color of the stamp it is either Scott 178 or 183. My best guess is Scott 183 due to the margins. The printing and perforating quality was better on Scott 178.

The cancel is a Boston type, with this size and style used c.1879 to c.1882. That would make someone lean toward it being a #183, but it's not proof that it is. Plus, this doesn't immediately look like typical ABNCo paper from the scan.

How about comparing this to a known ABNCo stamp (like a 206)? Hold both to the light or put in watermark fluid. If you see the obvious weave pattern of a typical ABNCo stamp, you'll know that's what it is.
