Hi all,

I recently inherited a bunch of boxes of 1800's and early 1900's stamps. I'm new to the hobby and dont know what Im looking at and could use some help determining whats what. Here are some images of stamps from 1850s and some confederate stamps.

I wonder whether the Confederate stamps both begin life on that cover/piece.

Can you post an image of the entire envelope with the CSA stamps? Stamp in first image appears to be an F Grill.

Welcome. First do not take any of the stamps off of the covers (envelopes). They will be more valuable as postal history left on the covers.
Please post scans or photos of the covers.

The first cover show has a stamp with what is called an F grill; quite faulty, unfortunately. The manuscript postmark is from Gooch's Mills, Mo. that did not have a postmarking device at the time.

The second is called an advertising cover for obvious reasons; quite nice. The cover and the one above is worth more than just the stamp. So keep both intact.

Can you post a copy of the envelope with the Confederate stamps? If there was a letter in that envelope it makes the item even more interesting to collectors. Often, the envelopes are without contents. You also appear to have a second envelope with a 3 cent Washington stamp on it. The second stamp has a bullseye cancel on it. The image of the stamp you posted isn't clear enough to tell whether or not that stamp has a grill. Scanning the items produces better images than a photo. Image editing software that comes with a scanner makes resizing the images a breeze. Thanks for following up with this thread.

The advertising cover is very cool. It's from 1859, not 1869. Just before the civil war.
