I cant make out the Wmk on the one on the R. Would they both be considered "Overprinted" or is the one on the right overprinted and the left one stamped? I think they are both O162 Scott - yes or no. Tks much.

so I think they are both cancelled. Its that I think the left one has the relief part in the cancel while the right one is overprinted, right? Just trying to get the terminology right. I think they are the same stamp. tks |

It would be useful for you to read this article about the printed and rubberstamped versions of this stamp:
Refuge Relief Stamps of India - by Dwarkadas Jivandas (google it) |

The handstamp is not in Scott. Scott probably does not list it on the basis that is a provisional item, locally produced. It it still a collectible postal item. |

I have an older Scott catalog, and both stamps are shown as Officials. The one without the overprint is listed as Scott O161 and the overprinted stamps is Scott O162. Neither one has any significant value. |

Quote: The handstamp is not in Scott There are various specialized catalogs for a reason. For example, Scott fails spectacularly for my Germany collecting. |

Although I agree that Scott is not a specialized catalog, both of these stamps are listed in Scott. You just have to look under the Official stamps to find them. |

The hand stamped overprint came from an office that didn't receive a supply of the printed overprinted stamps. A hand stamped Official and a printed Official. |

Terminology nuance - overprint vs cancel. The left stamp has a handstamp overprint, the right stamp has a press-printed overprint. Neither of these overprints would have "canceled" the stamp. The canceling was done in both cases with the circular cancels applied later.

Quote: Neither of these overprints would have "canceled" the stamp. Correct - but these 2 do show cancels, one minor and 1 more noticeable I believe, right? |
