Hi All:

Here's a tip that may help a few of us:

I've been very frustrated with the search function on the Linn's website. No matter what I search for, I get ZERO results. In fact, I tried searching for the word "STAMP" and linns said, "No pages were found that match your query"

So, I use Google's Advanced Search to search it for me. If you've never used Google's Advanced Search, it's easy. From the Google main site, click Advanced Search or use the link www.google.com/advanced_search

In the example below, I'm searching for a phrase rather than a single word; the important part is highlighted -- it tells Google to search only linns.com:

Once you get the hang of it, there's an even simpler way to focus your search on a specific website -- just include the SITE: keyword after your search string. Here's the same example in the search bar:

As I was preparing this post, I went to Linn's to capture a screen shot of their "Results Not Found" page to include here. Apparently, they've made updates and changes to their search engine, because it now works MUCH better than it ever has.

I still prefer Google Advanced -- and of course, the tip works for ANY site you want to search.

KirkS

P.S. I really like Linn's; I enjoy my subscription, and I don't mean to disparage them at all. I'm just trying to get all I can from their great archive of information.

I've tried using you format and it works with simple domains like linns.com but I have had no success with more complicated domain address.

Example: I would like to fine all of the zemstvo articles in the Rossica Journals.

Since my original post, Google has removed the "Advanced Search" button/link from its pages. The technique still works, but you have to manually type the query as shown in my image.

As Bobby demonstrated above, this technique works to search domains, not sub-directories. In other words, stop with the .EDU and don't add the part after the /
